This year marks the 5th year of collaboration between our sailing school and Taitung Senior Girls High School, building a meaningful program that introduces young students to sailing in Taiwan through structured learning and real on-the-water experience. Through this long-term partnership, we will continue to create opportunities for students to learn sailing, develop confidence, and enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities in Taitung.
A Three-Phase Sailing Journey
Our program is designed as a three-year journey, allowing students to progressively develop their sailing skills through carefully structured sailing classes.
For Grade 10 students, each class participates in a 2-day introduction to sailing. The first day focuses on theory, including understanding the wind, boat parts, and basic safety. On the second day, students head out onto the water at Taitung's Flowing Lake for hands-on sailing lessons. In total, more than 120 students experience sailing courses each year through this program.
In Grade 11, students have the opportunity to join the school’s sailing squad as an extracurricular activity. Around 15 students are selected each year to train consistently throughout the fall and spring semesters. During this time, they deepen their skills through regular sailing classes, building confidence, teamwork, and independence on the water. The highlight of the program comes in May and June, when the students transition from lake sailing to the open ocean – an unforgettable milestone in their journey to truly learn sailing in real conditions!
By Grade 12, students who have completed a full year in the sailing squad take on a new role. They become mentors, guiding younger students and helping them improve their skills. This “passing the baton” approach both strengthens their own understanding of sailing techniques and strengthens leadership and communication skills, an essential part of our sailing school philosophy.
A Historic Achievement
One of the biggest highlights this year is Sun Lin (孫霖), a Grade 12 student who will represent Taitung in a national sailing competition in Pingtung. She is the first student from Taitung Senior Girls High School to participate in the national sailing circuit, a huge milestone for both the school and the development of sailing in Taiwan.
We are incredibly proud of her achievement and excited to see what the future holds for her!
