From the Mountains to the Ocean: Sailing Experience for Students from Mudan Township

Taiwan's geography offers an incredible diversity of landscapes, yet many students spend most of their time within a relatively small part of the island. Last month, we had the pleasure of welcoming students from Shimen Elementary School (屏東縣牡丹鄉石門國民小學) for a one-day sailing experience in Taitung.

Located deep in the mountains of Mudan Township in southern Pingtung, these students are surrounded by forests, rivers, and beautiful mountain landscapes in their daily lives. This visit offered a very different perspective: an opportunity to learn about wind, water, and navigation, connect with the ocean and discover the world of sailing.

A Different Kind of School Activity

At our sailing school, we believe that some of the most memorable learning experiences happen outside the classroom. For this special visit, we designed a tailor-made program that introduced students to the fundamentals of sailing through a combination of theory, hands-on learning, and time on the water.

For many of the children, this was their first opportunity to experience sailing and explore a completely new environment. They picked it quickly, learning the basic parts of a sailboat, how sails use the wind to move a boat, essential safety procedures and basic steering and sail handling techniques

One of the unique aspects of sailing is that it combines physical activity, teamwork, problem-solving, and environmental awareness. Unlike many sports, students must constantly observe the wind, communicate with their teammates, and make decisions based on changing conditions. Through this sailing experience for kids, students discovered that learning can be active, challenging, and fun at the same time.
