Taitung Sailing Summer Camps: A Summer of Sailing, Adventure and New Memories
The Taitung sailing summer camps have officially come to an end, and what a summer it has been! From early-morning sailing sessions on the water to SUP adventures, river tracing, cultural experiences, beach games and evenings around the bonfire, our 2026 summer camps were filled with new skills, new friendships and plenty of unforgettable moments.
For another year, children and teenagers from Taiwan and around the world joined us in Taitung for a summer that was about much more than learning how to sail. It was a chance to spend time outdoors, challenge themselves, try something new and enjoy a week away from screens and everyday routines.
From the First Sail to the Final Day
For many campers, the week began with excitement... and perhaps a little uncertainty. Getting onto a sailboat for the first time can be both thrilling and intimidating. By the end of the week, however, it was wonderful to see how quickly students became more comfortable on the water.
Our morning sailing sessions gave campers the opportunity to develop practical sailing skills throughout the week. With experienced instructors and a strong focus on safety, students learned how to work with the wind, control their boats and cooperate with their teammates.
For returning students, the summer was also a chance to take their skills further. Rather than simply repeating the basics, experienced sailors could continue developing their confidence and understanding of sailing while enjoying the challenges that come with different conditions on the water. This included our open ocean students, who spent their mornings setting sail from Jinzun harbor and heading out to the horizon until lunchtime.
A Summer Beyond the Sailing School
One of the best things about our summer camps is that sailing is only part of the experience.
Afternoons were packed with outdoor adventures and activities designed to get campers moving, exploring and working together. Students could try SUP and water activities, take part in river tracing, learn hula dancing and experience elements of local Indigenous culture. These activities gave campers opportunities to discover completely different skills from those they practised on the sailboats.
One minute they might be concentrating on steering a boat and communicating with their sailing partner; the next they could be scrambling through a river, balancing on a paddleboard or learning something new from a local cultural experience.
Less Screen Time, More Real-Life Adventures
It can be difficult for children and teenagers to escape screens during the school year. Summer camp provides a valuable opportunity to put phones and devices aside and spend several days immersed in the outdoors.
At our Taitung camps, campers spent their days surrounded by mountains, rivers and water rather than screens. They learned through doing: whether that meant figuring out how to sail a boat, helping a teammate, navigating an outdoor activity or simply enjoying time with new friends.
There were also plenty of opportunities for campers to become more independent. Spending a week away from home—learning to be responsible for belongings, trying unfamiliar activities, washing up after meals and cleaning the bnb alongside other children—can be a meaningful part of growing in confidence.
Evenings by the Beach
After busy days on the water and outdoors, campers could wind down with night games, time together and one of the most anticipated camp traditions: a beach bonfire with marshmallows.
These quieter moments were often just as important as the big adventures. Campers had time to talk, laugh and get to know each other away from the structured activities of the day.
Of course, a successful camp also needs good food — and our campers were very well looked after by our Camp Mom, whose home-cooked meals helped keep everyone fuelled for another day of adventure.
More Than a Summer Camp
Looking back on the 2026 season, our favourite part isn't one particular activity. It's seeing how much the campers change during a week.
A child who arrives nervous about getting into a sailboat can leave asking when they can sail again. Someone who has never tried river tracing can discover that they love it. Campers who arrive not knowing anyone can leave with new friendships and shared memories.
That is what outdoor education is all about: giving young people opportunities to learn, take healthy risks, solve problems and discover what they are capable of — all while having an enormous amount of fun.

Keep Sailing This Fall and Winter
Although summer camp has finished, the sailing doesn't have to stop.
Our 2026–27 Taitung Open Sailing Club is now open for registration. The Fall/Winter program will run on Saturday mornings, with 10 classes from October 24, 2026 through January 16, 2027, plus one reserved make-up day.
Beginner Sailing Classes
Students who started learning to sail at Flowing Lake in previous years can continue developing their skills throughout the Fall/Winter term.
Autumn and winter can bring stronger winds, making it an excellent opportunity for students to practise sailing in more challenging conditions and build their confidence on the water.
Advanced Sailing Training
Students who already have experience sailing at sea can continue with more advanced training. When conditions allow, the team may head out onto the ocean, although ocean sessions are less likely during the Fall/Winter season.
When ocean conditions aren't suitable, training will continue at Flowing Lake.
Students who are currently at the beginner level and would like to move into advanced training can also contact the school. Coaches will provide additional training during the Fall/Winter and assess whether students are ready for more advanced ocean training during next year's spring and summer seasons.

Fee: NT$5,000 per student
