The first Taitung Inter-School Sailing Competition marks an important milestone in the development of sailing in Taiwan, particularly along the east coast. This event reflects years of collaboration between schools, instructors, and local organizations working together to create more opportunities for students to access sailing courses and outdoor activities.

A Growing Sailing Ecosystem
In recent years, partnerships with schools across Taitung, including high schools, junior high schools, and universities, have steadily expanded access to sailing training. Our long-term vision is to create a continuous learning pathway where students can begin sailing at a young age and continue developing their skills through different stages of education, eventually even pursuing careers within the sailing school ecosystem.
From Small Beginnings to Real Momentum
Just a few years ago, sailing programs in Taitung were still in their early stages, with very few students and limited institutional collaboration. Since then, participation has grown significantly. Students who first learned sailing in junior high have continued into high school programs, while university students are now helping introduce the sport to younger generations. This organic growth has made it possible to organize inter-school events and strengthen the local sailing community—a huge achievement in so short a time!

A New Kind of Competition
The competition brought together students from National Taitung Girls High School, Changbin Junior High School and the Children’s Bookhouse Foundation. Unlike formal national regattas, this inter-school competition was designed to be more accessible and engaging for students who are still developing their skills.

Instead of focusing only on traditional racing formats, the event included a variety of challenges, including boat rigging and assembly, knot-tying competitions, sailing relay races, and navigation-style challenges on the water. These activities allowed students to apply what they learned in sailing lessons in a fun and supportive environment, and help foster a long-term passion for sailing.

Community Support and Future Growth
The success of this event was made possible through the support of teachers, coaches, and local organizations. It also reflects a broader trend: the steady growth of sailing in Taiwan as more schools and communities invest in outdoor activities and experiential education.

With continued collaboration and increasing participation, our small but growing sailing community in Taitung is building a strong foundation for future young sailors. Future events are expected to grow in scale, welcoming more schools and creating even more opportunities for students to learn sailing. This first inter-school competition is only the beginning.
