From River to Ocean: Tamorak School's Final Sailing Adventure of the Year

After three years of learning together, this year's sailing program with Tamorak Indigenous School ended in the best way possible: a beautiful day sailing on the Pacific Ocean.

Tamorak is an alternative Indigenous school in eastern Taiwan that places great importance on outdoor education, cultural identity, and helping students build a deep connection with the environment around them. Rather than learning only inside the classroom, students regularly explore the rivers, mountains, forests, and coastline that shape their homeland.We are incredibly grateful that sailing has become part of that journey.

Three years ago, Tamorak School began partnering with Taitung Sailing School to establish a regular sailing program for its students. Throughout the year, the students train primarily on the Xiuguluan River (秀姑巒溪), which forms part of the border between Taitung and Hualien. The sheltered waters provide an ideal environment for students to develop confidence while learning the fundamentals of sailing. As their skills improve, the ultimate goal is always the same: one day, take those skills into the open ocean.

Learning Through Place

One of the things we admire most about Tamorak is its educational philosophy. Students are encouraged to understand the landscapes where they live; not only through science and geography, but also through Indigenous knowledge, language, and traditional place names. Learning the names of rivers, mountains, and coastal landmarks helps students build a stronger connection with their community and the generations who have lived there before them. Sailing fits naturally into this approach. The wind, currents, tides, and coastline become part of the classroom, encouraging students to observe, adapt, and work with nature rather than against it.

For the final session of the year, we travelled to Shiti Fishing Harbor (石梯漁港), where the weather could not have been better. The morning brought gentle winds and small rolling waves, ideal conditions for our younger students to experience ocean sailing for the first time. Moving from the calm river to the Pacific Ocean is an exciting milestone, and the favourable conditions allowed everyone to build confidence while discovering how different the sea feels compared with inland waters.

As the afternoon progressed, the wind gradually strengthened, bringing ideal sailing conditions for the older students. For the middle school girls who are graduating this year, it became a fitting final adventure together. After years of training, they were able to enjoy stronger winds, faster sailing, and the freedom that comes from trusting both themselves and their crew. It was a memorable way to celebrate the end of one chapter before beginning the next stage of their education. Wherever they go next, we hope they carry with them the confidence, teamwork, and connection with the ocean that sailing has helped them develop.

More Than a Sport

At Taitung Sailing School, we believe sailing is about much more than learning how to control a boat. It teaches observation, patience, resilience, teamwork, and respect for the natural world. Working alongside schools like Tamorak reminds us that sailing can also become a meaningful part of outdoor education, connecting students not only with the ocean, but also with their culture, their environment, and one another.
