First National Regatta for Taitung Sailing Team

While Taitung was busy hosting triathlons, our young sailors were quietly preparing for a challenge of their own. With our usual training lake temporarily occupied, our sailing school made the decision to travel south to Pingtung, where our team could continue their sailing training and prepare for their first national-level competition. For these students, this journey has been an important step in their path to learn sailing, gaining experience in a completely new environment and building the skills needed for competitive sailing in Taiwan.

Training Beyond Taitung

Traveling to a new location gave our sailors the chance to adapt to different wind conditions, water movement, and race environments. These experiences are essential for young athletes progressing through sailing courses and developing real-world confidence on the water. Over the past few weeks, the team trained with focus and determination, even organizing a mock race with fellow sailors from Kaohsiung. This kind of exposure helps bridge the gap between sailing lessons and real competition.

We also have several students competing on the national stage. This year, Taitung Sailing School was proudly represented by eight young sailors:

  • Five sailors competing in the Optimist class; and

  • Three sailors competing in the ILCA 4 class.

With four girls and four boys coming from across the region, including Dawu, Taitung City, and Dulan, the team reflects the growing reach of our Taitung camps and youth sailing programs in eastern Taiwan. For many of these young sailors, this was their first major regatta. Rather than focusing on results, the goal was to gain experience, build resilience, and deepen their understanding of sailing in Taiwan.

Facing the Challenge

Competing in a national regatta is no small feat. With over 200 boats on the water, the race environment was intense and complex. Sailors had to interpret flags and signals, manage their boats under pressure, and stay focused in physically demanding conditions: sun, waves, and long hours on the water. The first day was challenging. Many students were still adjusting to the scale of the event and the fast-paced nature of racing. But what stood out most was their willingness to try, to learn, and to keep going.

By the second day, the improvement was clear. Each sailor entered the race area with greater confidence, successfully starting with their fleet and completing their races. From the initial training sessions in Pingtung to the final day of competition, the progress was remarkable. This is exactly what sailing courses and competitive experiences are designed to achieve.

Through programs like our kids camps and ongoing training, we aim to create opportunities for young people across Taitung to access outdoor activities and discover the joy of sailing. This regatta marks the “first voyage” of what we hope will become a strong and enduring youth sailing team in Taitung.

A Community Effort

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who supported this journey:

  • Our dedicated coaches who spent long days on the water supporting the team;

  • Fellow sailors who shared equipment and training resources;

  • Local supporters and organizations who helped make participation possible; and

  • Parents who traveled back and forth between Taitung and Pingtung over multiple weekends.

This kind of community support is essential in growing sailing in Taiwan and making these opportunities accessible to more students. With continued training, we are confident that this team will keep improving and achieving new milestones.
