Expanding Sailing Education in Taiwan: ASA Certification and New Keelboat Courses

Since December, our sailing school has reached an exciting new milestone in the development of sailing in Taiwan. Our head coach successfully completed the Instructor Qualification Course (IQC), becoming a certified coach under the American Sailing Association (ASA). This achievement allows us to expand beyond dinghy sailing and begin offering internationally recognized sailing courses focused on keelboat training.

What is ASA?

The American Sailing Association (ASA) is one of the world’s leading sailing certification systems, with a global network of affiliated training centers across Asia and beyond. ASA certifications are widely recognized and, in many yacht clubs around the world, are a prerequisite for renting or chartering a sailboat.

For students looking to take their skills further, these qualifications open the door to sailing opportunities far beyond Taiwan. This marks an important step forward for anyone wanting to learn sailing at an international standard.

Introducing ASA Sailing Courses

With this new certification, our team can now offer a structured pathway of keelboat sailing lessons, including:

ASA 101 – Basic Keelboat Sailing

This entry-level course focuses on the fundamentals of keelboat sailing, including sailing terminology, safety procedures, boat handling, and sail theory. It is designed for beginners learning in light wind conditions.

ASA 103 – Basic Coastal Cruising

Students build on their foundational skills and learn how to handle longer day sails. Topics include navigation, anchoring, and operating larger vessels, making it a key step in progressing through sailing courses.

ASA 104 – Bareboat Cruising

This advanced course prepares students to skipper a vessel on multi-day trips. It covers boat systems, advanced docking techniques, and the responsibilities of managing a sailing yacht independently.

ASA Courses by Taitung Sailing School

In March this year, we successfully delivered our first ASA 101 course in Kaohsiung, welcoming a group of new students eager to experience a different side of sailing in Taiwan.

This course also marked an important internal milestone, as our experienced dinghy sailing coach stepped into the world of keelboats, expanding their expertise and strengthening our overall coaching team.

Starting in 2026, we will begin offering ASA-certified sailing courses in Taitung and Hualien, bringing internationally recognized sailing lessons to Taiwan’s east coast. This expansion means more students will have access to high-quality training while enjoying the unique natural environment and outdoor activities that eastern Taiwan is known for.
