Summer Has Officially Begun

Summer arrived a little earlier than usual this year at Taitung Sailing School. While most schools in Taiwan don't begin their summer holidays until July, we were excited to kick off our first summer camp in June, welcoming an international group of young sailors from Taiwan, Singapore, and the United States. Starting the season with students from different countries created a fun, bilingual environment from day one and reminded us that the love of sailing really does speak every language!

Mornings on the Water

Every morning began where it always should—with the wind. Students spent their mornings on the lake learning to sail through a combination of sailing theory, boat rigging, and plenty of time on the water. Whether they were stepping into a sailboat for the very first time or returning for another summer, every student challenged themselves to build new skills and confidence. Watching beginners gradually become independent sailors over the course of the week is one of our favourite parts of every camp.

Afternooon Adventures

Our summer camps in Taiwan have always been about much more than sailing. Each afternoon, students headed off to discover another side of Taitung through a range of outdoor adventures and cultural experiences. This week's activities included river tracing through cool mountain streams, an Indigenous forest experience, a musical and cultural workshop in Duli, and traditional hula-hula dancing and community activities. Each experience offered students a different way to connect with the natural environment and the diverse cultures that make Taitung such a special place.

Camp Traditions

No summer camp would be complete without a few traditions. On the final evening, everyone gathered around a beach bonfire beneath a sky full of stars. Marshmallows were roasted, stories were shared, and new friendships celebrated after a week of adventure together. As always, our kitchen team kept everyone well fuelled with freshly prepared meals throughout the week, providing plenty of energy for long days of sailing and outdoor activities.

One of the things we appreciate most each summer is the enthusiasm of the families who join us. Some travel from other parts of Taiwan, while others come from overseas, all sharing the excitement of seeing their children discover new experiences, build confidence, and make friends from around the world. Their support, encouragement, and willingness to embrace the adventure help make every camp a memorable one.

A Great Start to Summer

If this first week is any indication, we have an incredible summer ahead. With many more weeks of kids camps, sailing classes, and outdoor adventures still to come, we're looking forward to welcoming even more young sailors to Taitung over the coming months. Whether you're joining us from Taiwan or overseas, we can't wait to share another unforgettable summer of sailing, exploration, and adventure together.
