Our First C-Level Sailing Instructor Course

This year marked another exciting milestone for Taitung Sailing School: for the first time, we hosted a C-Level Sailing Instructor Course in collaboration with the Chinese Taipei Sailing Association (中華民國帆船協會) . The course is designed to provide entry-level certification for future sailing instructors, helping develop the next generation of coaches and supporting the continued growth of sailing in Taiwan.

Building the Future of Sailing Education

Over the past several years, the demand for qualified sailing instructors in Taitung has grown rapidly. As Taitung Sailing School continues to collaborate with schools, universities, and community organizations across eastern Taiwan, more educational institutions are introducing sailing into their own programs. For these initiatives to become sustainable, schools need more than equipment: they need trained teachers and instructors who can confidently teach students themselves. That is the motivation behind this instructor course: building local teaching capacity so that more schools can eventually operate independent sailing programs while maintaining high standards of safety and instruction.

The course brought together a diverse group of educators, coaches, and sailing enthusiasts. Participants included teachers and staff from Taitung Girls' Senior High School (臺東女中) , Changbin Junior High School (長濱國中) , Tamorak Learning Community (Tamorak共學團) , Junyi Experimental High School (均一實驗學校) and National Taitung University (臺東大學) . We were also delighted to welcome participants from outside Taitung who traveled specifically to attend the course, demonstrating the growing interest in professional sailing certification and instructor training throughout Taiwan.

Learning Beyond Sailing Technique

Being a great sailor does not automatically make someone a great instructor. The course therefore focused not only on sailing skills, but also on the broader knowledge required to teach effectively and manage sailing programs. Taitung Sailing School instructors led sessions covering multiple aspects of becoming a sailing coach.

Coach Fede introduced participants to the practical side of operating a sailing program, including equipment maintenance, fleet management, and the day-to-day organisation required to keep a sailing school running safely and efficiently. Coach Allen explored the educational side of coaching, discussing how sailing can be integrated into broader educational programs. These topics included sports education methodology, combining learning with recreation, sports psychology, creating positive learning environments and helping students develop confidence and independence. These sessions encouraged participants to think beyond technical instruction and consider the role sailing can play in personal growth.

To complement the educational components, experienced athletes and instructors from across Taiwan shared their expertise on practical coaching. Qi-en Liang (梁齊恩) from Yilan and Ziyan Huang (黃子言) from Kaohsiung led technical sessions focusing on boat handling techniques, teaching progression for beginner sailors, designing effective sailing lessons and adapting instruction to different ages and skill levels. Rather than simply demonstrating advanced sailing techniques, the emphasis was on how to teach those skills clearly and safely.

The course concluded with practical teaching experience during Taitung Sailing School's regular Sunday sailing program. Newly trained instructors had the opportunity to work directly with children and teenagers of different experience levels, applying everything they had learned throughout the course. Under the guidance of senior coaches, participants gained valuable experience delivering real sailing lessons, managing groups, and adapting their teaching to individual students. For many, this was the most rewarding part of the program.

Growing Sailing in Taitung

One of Taitung Sailing School's long-term goals has always been to create a sustainable sailing ecosystem in eastern Taiwan. That means not only teaching students how to sail, but also helping teachers become instructors, instructors become coaches, and schools develop their own sailing programs. By investing in instructor education today, we are laying the foundation for more opportunities for future generations to experience sailing in Taiwan.

The success of our first C-Level Sailing Instructor Course represents an important step in the continued development of sailing education in Taiwan. As demand for qualified instructors continues to grow, Taitung Sailing School looks forward to offering more opportunities for teachers, coaches, and sailing enthusiasts to gain professional certification and help bring the sport to even more communities.

After all, great sailing programs begin with great instructors, and every instructor starts by learning from someone else.
