If you’ve ever thought, “I want to learn sailing,” you’re not alone! Many people are curious about how to get started with sailing in Taiwan, but have a few common questions. Here are some quick answers to help you take the first step.
Can I Learn Sailing If I Can’t Swim?
Yes. You can still join sailing lessons even if you cannot swim. All students wear life jackets at all times, and classes take place on stable boats. While knowing how to swim can give you extra confidence, it is not a requirement to start learning. In fact, many of our students begin sailing courses at the same time they are learning to swim, so you'll be in good company!
What Age Can I Start?
Most children start at around 8 years old. At this age, they are ready to combine physical coordination with the mental skills needed to understand wind, direction, and strategy. Sailing is unique among outdoor activities because it requires constant observation and decision-making.
Is Sailing Safe?
Our beginner sailing classes are designed with safety as a priority. Training takes place on calm water, without strong currents or waves. All participants wear life jackets, and instructors are trained and certified according to national safety requirements, including lifeguard qualifications.
What Happens During a Sailing Course?
A typical sailing course includes both theory and practice. Students will:
1. Learn the parts of the boat (in English and Chinese)
2. Understand basic sailing theory
3. Practice rigging the boat and tying knots
4. Spend time on the water
On the water, lessons are divided into technical training and fun-based learning. Over a 4-day course, students can progress from zero knowledge to independently setting up and controlling a boat with confidence.
